Support the Appeal – Save the Mendham Headwaters

The Fight Continues – Join the Alliance to Protect Mendham's Future and Headwaters
On March 18, 2025, the Mendham Borough Joint Land Use Board (JLUB) will memorialize the January 29th vote approving the 5-story, 75-unit V-Fee apartment complex, despite overwhelming public concerns and expert testimony presented by the SAVE MENDHAM team, the Mendham Alliance for Preservation and Conservation (MAPC), a volunteer 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The MAPC presented critical environmental and infrastructure risks, yet the JLUB moved forward with its conditional approval, ignoring expert evidence that should have been considered by Mendham Borough and the NJDEP.

This project is more than just an overdevelopment concern—it’s a direct threat to our water resources, infrastructure, and community safety. That’s why MAPC will appeal the JLUB decision and has joined forces with the NJ Highlands Coalition and the Raritan Headwaters Association to fight for responsible development that aligns with Mendham’s character, sustainability, and environmental protections.
Where We Are
While some officials claim their hands were tied, this fight is not over. The SAVE MENDHAM team has taken critical steps to ensure that this project is properly reviewed and that development in Mendham aligns with community needs:
-
Hired a top Land Use Attorney to lead a legal appeal.
-
Engaged an Environmental Expert who identified flaws in the applicant’s submissions.
-
Secured a Traffic Expert to address safety concerns.
-
Teamed with the NJ Highlands Coalition & Raritan Headwaters Association to strengthen our case.
Why This Matters
Protecting the Raritan River Headwaters
The headwaters of the Raritan River are one of the most valuable natural resources in New Jersey, providing clean drinking water to millions. The MAPC, Raritan Headwaters Association and NJ Highlands Coalition support redevelopment projects in downtown areas that will result in improvements to stormwater management, wastewater treatment, and other environmental benefits. However, oversized development increases stormwater runoff, pollution, and erosion, endangering water quality and creating long-term restoration challenges.
The Raritan Headwaters Association, an environmental leader in watershed protection, will support the MAPC appeal to safeguard these vital water resources and ensure compliance with environmental laws. www.raritanheadwaters.org/
The NJ Highlands Coalition, dedicated to preserving the natural and cultural resources of New Jersey’s Highlands, is playing a crucial role in ensuring that this overdevelopment does not set a dangerous land use precedent for future planning decisions. www.njhighlandscoalition.org
Preventing Overburdened Infrastructure & Safety Risks
· Traffic & Pedestrian Safety: The area cannot safely handle the increased on-site traffic burden.
· School Overcrowding: Additional residential density puts stress on our local schools.
· Emergency Services Strain: Increased population raises demands on police, fire, and EMS, potentially delaying response times.
